Renovation of the library building to start in June 2019

The Jyväskylä University Library has operated in Seminaarinmäki’s Building B from 1974. During the renovation, library services will be located in the campus libraries of Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne and in the Aalto Library of the Main Building.

In the renovation, the technology and facility solutions of the 45-year-old library building will be updated to help the current and future generations to learn and study. Versatility, modifiability, comfort and ergonomics are goals that steer the renovation. The facilities will be ready in autumn 2021 and will adjust to varying purposes of use, for example, according to the time of the day.The opening hours will also be longer than before.

A zone-based division of functions in the renewed building will support independent working and make the building a meeting place of the University community and Jyväskylä residents. The entry lobby will have a restaurant and café zone and an area for exhibitions and events. Adjustable and modern teaching and reading room facilities are grouped in different floors and they suit for various types of learners. There will be more teamwork rooms than before. The building’s service offering becomes more versatile because the University’s Digital Services also move to the building.

The renovated library will have less room for printed books and magazines but the material will be available in an electronic format or the printed versions can be ordered from the Kanavuori collection centre or other libraries of the world.

Working conditions will improve due to better air conditioning, temperature control and acoustics. The nature of Central Finland and the unique history of the University of Jyväskylä will be visible in the building’s interior and exhibitions. The recognisable colour world will be remained.

Being the building closest to the city centre, the library is an inviting gateway to the University of Jyväskylä. The building will be a meeting place for the University staff, students and city residents of various age – “a living façade of the University”, as Rector Keijo Hämäläinen says.

Temporary library in Mattilanniemi

In April 2019, the library functions will move to temporary facilities. When the library building is closed, the campus libraries of Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne, the Aalto Library of the main building and the Kanavuori collection centre are ready to serve customers. The distributed placement of material and the moving phase in spring will create challenges, but the library staff will do its best to serve customers normally.

The library is built for its users. Therefore, ideas and discussion is needed throughout the project. For example, we will report about the progress of the project on our website and social media channels.

You can participate in the process by asking, giving feedback, commenting on social media updates and participating in events and workshops related to the renovation.
